“Riding the Rapids”

We are three retired teachers. In our combined sixty-nine years of teaching first and second grades, we thought we had experienced it all; happiness, joy, excitement, sadness, frustration and fear. However, when we decided to go white water rafting down the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we experienced feelings we had never known before. Our first impression was of the breathtaking beauty of the canyon. The first forty minutes of our trip, the river was fairly calm so that we could observe plant life, wild life, rock formations and waterfalls. After forty minutes we stopped and climbed, or should I say crawled, up a very steep and rocky path to enjoy a delicious open-air lunch. After lunch we lurched back down to our rafts. Due to the deceptive smooth first part of the trip we were smug, self-congratulatory and filled with self-competence. This white water rafting was a snap, nothing like we had been led to believe. Were we ever wrong! Our self-confidence was quickly dashed, or should I say splashed, dumped, dunked, jerked and soaked. Much of the time we were air-borne and totally terrified. We finally disembarked soaked to the skin and exhausted. It was absolutely the most exhilarating experience three very young teachers in their mid sixties could ever experience.
